Obama vows again to close Guantanamo

Back in 2009, Obama promised to close the Base at Guantanamo Bay during his first year in office. In 2013 it remains open at a cost of $120 million annually.  More than 130 prisoners are on hunger strike, and over 20 of them are being force fed (a practice considered torture by the United Nations Human Rights Commission). Obama has blamed Congress for slowing down the closure. 
 
Some interesting points:

• 86 of the prisoners have been cleared for release.
• The Department of Defense, the director of national intelligence, and the Department of Homeland Security have all unanimously determined that more than half of the population doesn’t need to be there.
• If you are not on that list of 86, there is no process for you to challenge your detention. We are holding them indefinitely because if we release them, they might harm us because we’ve held them for 11 years without charge.
• "Perhaps the stickiest point, however, is what to do with detainees the administration doesn’t want to release, but doesn’t want to try in commissions or court – those considered dangerous, but for whom incriminating evidence may be inadmissible or may involve intelligence matters too sensitive to air publicly" <----- SOUNDS LIKE TORTURE TO ME
• Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld believed that "innocent people languishing in Guantanamo for years was justified by the broader War on Terror."(via the Atlantic).

 Oh cool. Do they still hate us for our freedom?
