Across Britain the legacy of Margaret Thatcher plays out. Loved by some, hated by many for the damage she inflicted as a free market authoritarian. Yet here in America our leaders had heartfelt remembrances of her.
Obama quoted upon her death, "The world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend." There was also the Republican pukefest of love considering she was an ally of reagan:
Meanwhile back in the UK, thousands took to the streets to celebrate via what were called "death parties." Dave Zirlin of the nation writes, Yet if the same media praising Thatcher and appalled by the popular response would bother to ask one of the people celebrating, they might get a story that doesn't fit into their narrative, which is probably why they aren't asking at all.
"House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) called Thatcher “the greatest peacetime prime minister in British history.” Excuse me while I barf!Reason's why I think Thatcher sucks:
- She once said to General Augusto Pinochet: "[Thank you] for bringing democracy to Chile." ( He was a merciless overseer of torture, rapes and thousands of political executions).
- Described Indonesian dictator General Suharto as "One of our very best and most valuable friends". A valuable friend who had an "encirclement and annihilation" campaign for the East Timorese, whom he had killed, starved, disappeared and herded into "resettlement camps."
- Helped bring about the first Gulf War and used her influence to advocate for the 2003 attack on Iraq.
- She denounced Nelson Mandela and his ANC as "terrorists," and refused to back sanctions against the Apartheid regime in South Africa just as Reagan had.
